A UK-based FinTech scale-up - Series A, building payment infrastructure for B2B e-commerce companies - had near-zero organic search presence despite operating in a growing category with significant search demand. Their website had 40 pages, no blog, no structured content programme, and domain authority of 12. Their primary growth channels were paid search and referrals from integration partners. The cost of paid search was increasing as the category grew more competitive, and the reliance on partner referrals created a concentration risk.

The brief: build organic search presence as a strategic owned channel, targeting the decision-stage queries used by B2B e-commerce companies evaluating payment infrastructure solutions.

The situation

The company had two founding engineers who understood their product deeply but no marketing function beyond a head of growth focused on paid acquisition. Content was non-existent; the website was purely functional. Organic search was generating fewer than 200 visits per month, almost entirely from branded queries. the competitive field showed established players (Stripe, Checkout.com, Adyen) with domain authority of 70-90 dominating broad category terms - making head-on competition for "payment gateway" or "payment processing" unrealistic.

The SEO audit findings

Our initial audit identified four priority issues: (1) no content targeting any non-branded queries - the website had no blog, no guides, no case studies, no landing pages for specific use cases; (2) technical SEO problems including missing meta descriptions on 60% of pages, no schema markup, and poor Core Web Vitals scores (LCP of 4.2s); (3) no internal linking structure - the 40-page website was essentially flat with no hub-and-spoke content architecture; (4) zero backlinks from relevant B2B FinTech or e-commerce domains.

The strategy

Given the competitive field, we designed a niche topical authority strategy rather than attempting to compete directly for high-competition category terms. The approach: build deep topical authority in the specific intersection of "B2B e-commerce payments" - a narrower but highly commercial niche where the established broad payment players had less depth than in their core consumer-focused content.

The keyword strategy concentrated on three cluster types: decision-stage queries from B2B e-commerce companies evaluating payment infrastructure ("best payment gateway for B2B e-commerce," "invoice payment solutions for B2B"), comparison and alternative queries ("Stripe vs [competitors] for B2B"), and use-case-specific queries ("recurring billing for B2B subscriptions," "payment terms for B2B online checkout").

Execution: 12-month programme

Q1
Technical foundation + hub pages

Fixed all critical technical SEO issues: meta descriptions, page speed (LCP from 4.2s to 1.8s via image optimisation and CDN implementation), schema markup (Organisation, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList on all pages), and canonical tags. Built 4 core hub pages covering the primary solution areas - B2B payment gateway, B2B recurring billing, B2B checkout optimisation, and B2B payment terms management.

Q2
Cluster content and case studies

Published 24 cluster articles supporting the 4 hub pages - 6 per hub covering use cases, comparison content, and decision-stage queries. Published 4 customer case studies with quantified outcomes. Built comparison pages for the 5 most commonly evaluated competitors in the B2B e-commerce segment.

Q3
Authority building + original research

Commissioned a B2B e-commerce payments benchmark report (surveying 200 B2B e-commerce companies on payment acceptance rates, checkout abandonment, and payment terms friction). Published and promoted with PR outreach to B2B FinTech publications - generating 34 backlinks from relevant domains in 6 weeks. The research report became the most-linked page on the domain.

Q4
Expansion and AEO optimisation

Expanded to 40 additional cluster articles based on keyword gap analysis. Added FAQPage schema and Speakable schema to all hub pages and top-performing cluster articles. Updated existing content with Q3 research report data for freshness signals. Added HowTo schema to 12 process-specific articles.
